Griefs upon griefs

David McCullough's biography of John Adams has quickly catapulted it's way into my top ten list of favorite books. The book ends with a quotation of Adams from a letter he wrote from the Netherlands during difficult times. It sums up how I desire to view the world, to never forget the joy in simple things, and the beauty of the world around us.

"Griefs upon griefs! Disappointments upon disappointments! What then? This is a gay merry world notwithstanding."

In McCullough's opinion, Adams couldn't have a more fitting epitaph.
