Thanksgiving Bread

Happy Thanksgiving all!

I've been busy throwing together some bread for the family feast tomorrow. I received some bannetons from the San Francisco Baking Institute just in time for this task. A banneton is a cane/reed basket in which you allow your final shaped bread to proof before baking. It imparts a cool looking circular design into the heart of the bread that I think looks great.

Hope you all have a terrific time tomorrow!

Incidentally, I believe that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. All the benefits of Christmas without the hassle of the gifts, and a holiday that's all about food is tops in my book.

Good looking bread!

You'll be happy to know that I went back and re-read your pie crust post at midnight before Thanksgiving. It gave me the courage and know-how (as well as the even more important know-why) I needed to tackle my holiday pie project.

I was disappointed to discover that I had no shortening in the house, so I had to use all butter, but the crusts still came out pretty well and I received many compliments. I am feeling very ready to make a selection of pies for Christmas this year, even anxious for the project. But I will go buy some butter-flavored Crisco first.

Thanks for putting the time into that post. It has transformed me from a fearful, store-bought pie sort of a girl into a successful pie maker. Who knows; maybe someday MY children will speak with reverence and high praise of their mother's pie crusts.

Wonder of wonders.

Thanks for the comments!

Glad the post was helpful for you Sherry. Is there a loftier calling than helping people to make pie? I don't think so. I feel fulfilled now.

I'll be posting my mom's apple pie recipe here in the next few days, which is a real winner. And her crust got Alison's crew saying it's the best they've ever had...something to try for Christmas, and perhaps rave reviews from your own crew.

I see wonder of wonders in your future.
