I'm sitting in a hotel room in Traverse City tonight. I'm having a blast with a gig I'm doing this week with the Boston Brass. The Boston Brass is an amazing brass quintet. Think Canadian Brass on steroids. They do a lot more jazz influenced music, and present very high energy shows.
They recorded a Christmas album a year or so ago, featuring the music of Stan Kenton. It's a large brass ensemble, and so they hired a few supplementary musicians to join the group.
So besides the Boston Brass, the horn player from the Canadian Brass is with us. One of the former trumpet players of the Canadian Brass is playing with us too, and so is the former trombonist of the Empire Brass, who I know from meeting 20 years ago as a student at Tanglewood.
It's a GREAT group! AMAZING brass playing, and I'm very fortunate to be a part of it. Three of my colleagues from the symphony are playing too, as well as a couple of people from my brass quintet.
This could be the best assemblage of musicians I've ever had a chance to perform with.
It's going to be a good week. It's times like this where I can't imagine doing anything else for a living.
