Cakes and more cakes
I've got another cake in the oven, this time another St. Patrick's Day chocolate cake. It's reaching that stage where I feel like I'm just punching in the clock, but I keep getting compelled by the irresistible, "what if?" Curiosity gets the best of me, so it's always still fun. This is at least the tenth cake I've made of this particular variety, and I do feel like I'm closing in on the final entry. I've got the texture I want, and very close to the taste. My most recent cake got rave reviews on both of those fronts, but the problem is that when it bakes, it rises way too high above the pan, cracks and then collapses back into itself, though you wouldn't know if you hadn't baked it. I'm assuming the judges will be watching every stage, if and when I get accepted into the finals. Cracks in a cake, even if they end up on the bottom are no good. This time out, I'm going with no leavener at all, and relying on the bubbles in the beer to do the work, without the added push of the baking powder and baking soda. I think it will work, but we'll see. I should know in less than an hour.

Well did the old adage (what goes up must come down) hold true?
Better yet, let us be the judge - come on over and don't forget the cake.
Alison added that you should be sure to bring ice cream, too.
We're such demanding eaters, er...judges, but hey, you need to be ready for the rigors of competition, 'cause right now someone else is working even harder on their cake.
And one last thing, we're running a little low on 2% milk, so, uh...
Oh dear. Paul's taking over your blog. Dude needs a hobby.
You guys are cracking me up!
I've still got another cake to go tonight...but I'll be delivering probably three cakes tomorrow: two made tonight, and one tomorrow.
But you're on your own with the ice cream and 2%.
I'll be by in the early afternoon, by the way, if someone will be around. I have rehearsal at the ski slopes at around 3:30...probably heading through around 2:30, and would definitely appreciate your input.
2:30 is great. The kids and I are happy to let you know what we think. As it's only three cakes, Paul might not get in on them.
Paul is making threats, but since he probably won't even have a crack at the cakes, I wouldn't worry.
Sans ice cream and milk...hmm, that'll lose you a few points from the judges.
Do you really want to put yourself behind the eightball that way, Dan?!
Just trying to make this as realistic as possible. I prefer Hudsonville vanilla & Country Fresh 2% with MY cake. : )
Paul is that rare combination of a beggar AND a chooser.
Alison, you'd better watch it!
Oh wait, that was some guy named, "Paujl" made all those demands.
That's it! I'm getting my own blog, so I don't have to do the "other" button anymore.
Look out blog world!
Oh, "who" made all those demands. I neglected to say.
Paul's outside taking Jack out, so I can take a break from the dueling laptops.
We are sitting in bed, clickety clacking and LAUGHING!
I'm guessing you're still at the store and I'm wondering how many comments Paul and I can get on this before you return.
While the baker's away...
Paul's back so he'll be good for at least another fifty.
And that's without even trying.
I think this could be aptly referred to as a "blogskrieg".
Paul doesn't know it but I'm racing him to be the 20th comment. That's the way I like to race, it helps my success rate.
I asked him at 19 if he was good for anymore. "If you goad me," he said.
That last one was me goading him.
Oh he's clickey clacking again!
Well Dan, my battery's running low and I don't have the initiative to get off my can to retrieve my powercord, this will have to be goodnight.
I know, you'll miss all my commenting, but the judges have to get their sleep if you want them to be fully on their game when the cakes arrive.
He has his laptop turned away from me so I can't read what he's writing. I think his battery is low - PC!
Last night he was talking smack about my Mac and that really ticks me off. I never disparage his PC, because I am kind and magnanimous...a sort of technological noblesse oblige.
Again, I don't know what Paul is worrying about. I mean, he can get a good night's sleep, but since he won't be judging anything...
Paul just said, "Poor Dan, his blog is pretty much our bi-atch."
He is clearly NOT a blogger. He doesn't understand that the sight of "25 comments" is going to make your heart race.
Simple pleasures.
Good luck with the second cake.
Do NOT forget to get your pie plates tomorrow, and your red towel that insulated some other baking travels...it's really a wonder Paul and I can fit through our doorways, thanks (or no thanks) to you.
Go baking soda? powder? Leavening!
Alison, you're right...seeing 25 comments is the blogger's dream, and if it means from time to time that ye olde blog has to become someone's bi-atch to get it done, well, the blog does what the blog needs to do.
I'm trying to think of the last time I saw 25 comments on someone's blog...
It's much more fun to talk about cakes.
And probably healthier. Until they start being eaten.
