That's potentially sweet news. I wonder what direction he'll take it. Have to keep track of this one - thanks for sharing the good news.
What I think is a good sign is that Peter Jackson is still executive producer, and hired this guy to make the movies. Jackson will ensure that there's an aesthetic continuity, don't you think? But what Del Torro could bring is some very cool dragon stuff, and the spiders in Mirkwood. I would expect that Gollum will be the same as well--how could he be different? I think the world needs to look like it's part of the continuity...
The only thing that I'm concerned about is the "in between" story. That's borderline for me, but if they can somehow tap into other Tolkein story lines and create something new, it could be fun.
